September 10, 2011 Part 5 Finale Destination Hannibal   Leave a comment

We reached our destination Hannibal, MO mid-afternoon.  While driving to Hannibal waterfront park, we noticed the lighthouse on the hill, watched a riverboat cruise by and admired the Mark Twain statue.   We decided to take the long steep uphill trek to the lighthouse. We didn’t realize that it was 244 steps up for a beautiful view of Hannibal and the Mississippi river http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM1CRX_Mark_Twain_Memorial_Lighthouse_Hannibal_Missouri

We stopped at “Lover’s Leap” for a spectacular view of the Mississippi River, recently cut fields across river and a rainbow http://www.greatriverroad.com/hannibal/loversleap.htm

On the way out-of-town, we discovered a tree full of Turkey vultures, a beauty and beast opportunity with rainbow and train cars.  A little further down the road we must have been at just the correct angle because not only was the rainbow extremely bright but on closer examination, we discovered this double rainbow.

It was a great day to see Missouri from Illinois’s Great River Road.
